I really love when people create new styles of animation and renders using CG than the usual style you see in all CG animated movies. The thing is a lot of people new to the animation industry forget – “It’s not always about cool renders with amazing HDR lighting and fluid effects, etc. CG Animation is just another tool or medium to tell your story across.”
So, you should be asking yourself questions before you make a short film, advertisement, game…
Can I get the story or the point of the animation across with simple render? Do I need realistic water or HDR lighting? How many times people will see the film? Is it showcasing the right skills of mine? Is it in my budget? Do I have enough manpower to create the film? The list goes on…
This is very important especially for students who are interested to get a break in this industry. I learned it the hard way. You can either be a generalist or specialized in something. Smartest way is to be a generalist first but then master yourself in one specific section of the animation process whether it’s animating, rigging, lighting, modeling. Not everyone can be master of all trades.
So, chek out these new Vodafone commercials currently being aired in India during the IPL matches:
Simple renders, funny commercials!

Wow, not animated. But the backgrounds definitely look CG. Any links to the making of these commercials or the Spy vs Spy one? I still love the style and is definitely doable in CG.
